HOTEL IDEAL FOR WALRUSES … AND MORE!
Unexpectedly, given the global warming, the cold winter has returned. The location of our hotel on the shore of a beautiful lake makes it an ideal place for walruses and, since the lake has frozen over, for skating. On February 10th, to be exact, the lake was covered with ice, and it’s getting bigger every night. As a safe area for skating, we have designated a wide strip of the lake. We don’t push anyone, everyone judges their own ability and risk threshold, but we announce that we do it. We are on the ice every day and have a lot of fun :). Please do not leave the track. Ropes, spikes and many years of experience in ice assessment and exit from broken ice are our expirience.
CRAWL UNDER THE ICE?
It sounds corny, but we actually train this every year in our coastal waters. This is an important skill if you want to use natural ice rinks. We go out on the brittle ice in full gear, meaning we wear the kind of clothing and probably skates we want to wear without falling in. The ice is either already very brittle, or we cut it a little so that under the weight of the body it breaks, crumbles, opens up. This lasts for the blink of an eye and we are in the water. It’s an interesting experience to see how we behave in such a crisis situation – scream, panic? or methodical action? It varies, so it is definitely worth trying under safe conditions, i.e. under the guidance of people who are ready to help at any time.
Speaking of swimming, you are welcome to go for a walrus swim after the sauna or without warming up in the sauna. Just warm up and get in. We have walrus socks for rent. A hat and gloves are a must for every walrus. A bathrobe is provided in the room. On request, for a small fee (the price of fuel), we will light a bio-fire, because it blends in beautifully with the photos.
And then… a warm pool, a fireplace, a good dinner with breakfast, and then skating again.
IS ICE BATHING HEALTHY AND SAFE?
This is a question everyone asks themselves. There is a lot of information on this topic on the web and in forums, but it is all a bit biased… We do not want to encourage or discourage anyone, we just want to create the conditions for a pleasant winter swimming experience. Of the many resources I recommend this article LINK – it’s worth knowing something before you enter the icebreak.
